David Solomon's long-awaited update to Helen Custer's original survey of the Microsoft Windows NT operating system is an excellent guide to the internals of the operating system for programmers, systems administrators, and other computer professionals. At 500+ pages, it is chock full of great information about NT that is simply unavailable from any other source. Profusely illustrated and full of very good examples. Custer's original "Inside Windows NT" book was always long on self-congratulations (she apparently was the official "historian" of the project), but short on the kinds of detail that makes hackers drool. It was also written to NT version 3, and is now considerably out to date. Solomon's revision is a total rewrite that remedies this situation. The book is current on NT 4.0, and even contains a good chapter on upcoming changes in NT 5.0. This book definitely belongs on any Windows NT programmer's bookshelf. Solomon writes in the introduction that he was given access to NT source code, and he demonstrates how to use the kernel debugger to decipher what is happening inside the operating system. Even so, he manages to keep the presentation lively and informative. He also reports he had access to the NT developers themselves to review what he had written, which guarentees the accuracy of the book. In several areas I found concise explanations of features that other less well-connected authors and experts had written either in a vague or contradictory way. I am very grateful for Solomon's book clearing up the confusion in these areas.
While its a good read about the original design of Windows NT, the overall design has drifted since then with more and more services going into kernel space. It's still interesting to see how ambitious NT was, and that the hardware of the time really held it back.This makes a good companion to 'Show Stopper!: The Breakneck Race to Create Windows NT and the Next Generation at Microsoft', but more so for the technical crowd. A must for anyone interested in 90's tech that shaped the internet wave.
This book was written at the start of when Windows NT was created and does a nice simple job of explaining the goals of what Windows NT was to be and how the team would pull together a lot of technologies that were only 'theory' at the time.Surprising information for readers:NT was designed to NOT be Unix-like for many reasons and to avoid the pitfalls of the Unix-model that you now seen Linux and OS X having trouble overcoming.NT was and is the most 'portable' OS designed, not only for code portability, but in the architecture of how the OS was designed it can move to various architectures easily and also get the maximum amount of potential and performance out of an architecture. (Many consider Linux to be a highly portable OS, which it is, but in actual OS design falls short of NT in this regard.)NT is and Object Based OS that can continue to add on new technologies without breaking existing systems or compromising or having to compensate for old and new code.Over the years people have stopped talking about the technical details of Windows NT and this book is a good place to start if you someone wants to truly understand computers and OS technology.As Microsoft has moved NT to be the unified OS that runs on everything from WP8 and Windows 8 desktop all the way up to Windows 2012 Server, the relevance of NT is once again something to be understood to see how it can run on a tiny phone or a supercomputer effectively and effortlessly.

One of the best books I read on NT kernel. While you have new versions and editions with a lot of technical information, tests, experiments, etc. This first edition keeps the focus on NT architecture and design. Awesome book!
